1. Zolgensma - The Most Expensive Liquid in the World

Zolgensma is the number one most expensive liquid in the world.
It is a one time gene therapy drug. Image credit: News18

Price: $2.1 million per dose for 5.5 ml ($1.706 Billion per gallon)

Why so expensive: Because of the tiny market size in the pharmaceutical sector and the possibility that it could save lives.

A single treatment of this drug costs the staggering amount mentioned above. A single dose volume ranges between 5.5 ml to 16.5ml as the dose depends on the weight of the patient

The dose is in the kit. Zolgensma is very expensive because it helps in treating the rare genetic disorder of Spinal Muscular Atrophy effectively. It is the leading cause of death among genetic disorders in children and babies.

The disease is caused by the functional survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene which leads to paralysis, loss of movement, severe muscle weakness, and eventually death.

For this, it is a treatment that results in life-changing for families that have loved ones with the disorder. The occurrence of the disease is about 1 in 10,000 children.

Most times family fundraise funds to buy this drug. It is a drug manufactured by Novartis Gene, a US-based Swiss biopharmaceutical company.

The US Food and Drug Administration approved the drug on the 24th of May 2019 and the United Kingdom's National Health Services (NHS) also approved it on the 9th of March 2020. It is the #no. 1 most expensive liquid in the world in 2024.

2. Scorpion Venom

One of the most expensive liquids in the world is Scorpion Venom.

Price: $39 million per gallon (volume like the size of a sugar grain costs $130)

Why so expensive: It is hard to get, as it is gotten from one of the most dangerous scorpions on the planet, a deathstalker and it is only gotten by milking this scorpion by hand. Plus the fact that the liquid is a deadly venom.

It is one of the top most expensive liquids in the world because of the way it is gotten as explained above and milking a single scorpion can only produce two milligrams of the venom.

Meaning to get a gallon of venom, you have to milk that same scorpion up to 2.64 million times, is that possible? Even if you try it, you will eventually make a mistake and you will get stung.

Even though a single sting might not kill someone, you may get hurt so hard and it may lead to a devastating end. Dealing with this animal means extreme bravery.

In spite of the fact that venom is deadly, it has many useful components in it that are used as pioneer breakthroughs in medicines.

For instance, Chlorotoxins help in binding with certain cancer cells in the spine and cancer cells. Some components are also used in treating malaria.

More research is still going on as regards its usage. Kaliotoxin from the venom has also been used to treat bone disease in rats.
